Félicien Rops was born in Namur in 1833 into a bourgeois Catholic family. After studying at the Academy of Fine Arts in Namur and then in Brussels, he became known for political and social caricature. In 1856, he founded the satirical newspaper Uylenspiegel with Charles De Coster, where his line attacks hypocrisy, clericalism and bourgeois conventions. From the 1860s, his regular stays in Paris opened him up to the world of publishing and an in-depth practice of etching, drypoint, aquatint and lithography. From the 1860s, his regular stays in Paris opened him up to the world of publishing and to an in-depth practice of etching, drypoint, aquatint and lithography. He created frontispieces and illustrations for Baudelaire, Barbey d'Aurevilly, Mallarmé and Verlaine. At Rops, the book became a space experimentation where text, symbol and image interpenetrate. Its female figures, smokers, drinkers, courtesans or allegorical creatures, are not simple eroticism: they depict desire, the power of money and the moral tensions of the big city. The Temptation of Saint Anthony diverts religious iconography by replacing Christ with a naked woman on the cross. This visual blasphemy combines anticlerical satire, fantasy and criticism of repression. Installed in the Paris region with the Duluc sisters, Rops travels a lot and continues his technical research, notably with Armand Rassenfosse. Installed in the Paris region with the Duluc sisters, Rops traveled a lot and continued his technical research, notably with Armand Rassenfosse. Decorated with the Legion of Honor in 1889, he died in 1898. His work prepares symbolism while retaining the biting energy of caricature. The "Félicien Rops" selection notably compares The Temptation of Saint Anthony and The Absinthe Drinker. His reading favors the material.
Rops never separates virtuosity from scandal: the line first seduces, then reveals the desires, hypocrisies and violence of its century.
