1616 -1680 · Dutch Golden Age, Rembrandt's workshop and Amsterdam portrait
Ferdinand Bol was born in Dordrecht in 1616. Around the mid-1630s, he went to Amsterdam and joined Rembrandt's studio. There he learned to construct scenes using chiaroscuro, to take up a composition several times and to give biblical figures a human presence. His first works were so close to the master that some have long been confused with those of Rembrandt. Bol opened his own studio around 1642 and gradually developed a clearer and more elegant way. In portraiture, he adopted aristocratic poses and refined fabrics associated with Van Dyck; in history painting, he looked at Rubens and amplified gestures, color and decor. This development corresponds to the taste of the rich sponsors of Amsterdam. Merchants, regents, officers and influential families entrusted him with their effigies. The Trip family played a major role in this success, as did civic institutions. Bol received commissions for Amsterdam City Hall and the Admiralty, including several official portraits of Michiel de Ruyter. Balustrades, columns, curtains and costumes place the model in a prestigious space, while the light retains the softness learned at Rembrandt. After his marriage in 1669 to the wealthy widow Anna van Erckel, he seemed to stop painting almost entirely.
