1793 -1865 · Austrian Biedermeier, natural light and academic reform
Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller was born in Vienna in 1793 in a modest environment. He entered the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna in 1807 while earning his living by drawing and coloring prints. Professor, miniaturist and theater set painter in Bratislava, Zagreb, Brno and Prague, he acquired great versatility before returning to Vienna. He copied the old masters of the imperial gallery and quickly became a sought-after portrait painter. His precision was not limited to resemblance: light, skin tones, satin, lace and furniture gave the model a social and material presence. From the 1830s, Waldmüller devoted increasing attention to landscape. THE Prater, the Wienerwald, the Salzkammergut and Italy are studied directly on the motif. He defends the observation of nature and realistic sunlight against the recipes of academic education. His very popular rural genre scenes may seem anecdotal but also address work, poverty, education and social change. Appointed curator of the Academy's collection in 1829, he published reform projects from 1846. His opposition to the system caused his sidelining and then his dismissal in 1857; he was only rehabilitated shortly before his death. Waldmüller died near Vienna in 1865. His luminous naturalism was rediscovered by artists from the Viennese secession, who saw him as a precursor. The selection "Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller" notably compares Vue du Prater in Vienna. His reading favors composition.
Waldmüller demands that the painting return to the visible world: the sun, the tree and the face correct the conventions of the workshop.
