Fernand Cormon, born Ferdinand Anne Piestre in Paris in 1845, trained with Jean-François Portaels in Brussels, then Alexandre Cabanel, Eugène Fromentin and Jean-François Busson. He exhibited at the Salon from 1868 and established himself with vast compositions where academic scholarship met contemporary taste for the Orient, the Bible and the origins of humanity. The painting is at the same time a biblical story, a speculation anthropological and meditation on fault. Other works explore the Stone Age, hunting, iron or distant civilizations. His practice extends to large settings, notably for civic buildings and the Universal Exhibition. A forge constitutes a striking exception for its attention to the contemporary industrial world: fire, metal and workers replace ancient heroes. Cormon runs a busy free workshop in Montmartre. Toulouse-Lautrec, Van Gogh, Émile Bernard, Louis Anquetin and Matisse pass through, finding in its relative tolerance a place to transform academic teaching. Member of the Institute and professor at the School of Fine Arts, he died there Paris in 1924. His work testifies to the ambitions, contradictions and narrative powers of history painting in the age of new sciences.
