Still schooners, detailed ports, open horizons and crystal clear light make Fitz Henry Lane a master of the 19th-century American maritime landscape.

Fitz Henry Lane was born in 1804 in Gloucester, a large port in Massachusetts, under the name Nathaniel Rogers Lane. An infirmity contracted in childhood permanently limited his mobility, but prevented neither drawing nor careful observation of the maritime world. In 1831, he officially obtained the first name Fitz Henry, long wrongly read by historians Fitz Hugh. Installed in Boston, he entered the lithographic studio of the Pendleton brothers in 1832. From the 1840s, Lane presented himself as a marine painter and exhibited in Boston and New York. He came back to live in Gloucester around 1849 and built a house-workshop overlooking the port. From this height, as during his travels to Castine, Penobscot or Mount Desert, he draws coasts, islands, rocks and rigging. His paintings combine nautical accuracy and poetic transformation. The hulls, sails and warehouses are precisely constructed, but the morning or evening light gradually simplifies the story. Calm water, immense sky, isolated boat and transparent horizon produce a feeling of silence today linked to American luminism. Lane often works from old drawings, varying the time, weather or position of ships for each order. Recognized artist and a committed citizen of Gloucester, he died in his home in 1865.
