1438 -1445 · Frescoes of San Marco, Michelozzo architecture and Dominican meditation
The cycle of Fra Angelico at the Dominican convent of San Marco in Florence constitutes one of the most coherent ensembles of the first Renaissance. Rebuilt between 1437 and 1443 by Michelozzo at the request of Cosimo de Medici, the convent offered Fra Giovanni da Fiesole a clear architecture of cloisters, corridors and cells. Between approximately 1438 and 1445, the painter and his studio covered these spaces with images intended not for a court audience, but for the daily meditation of the brothers. The Annunciation placed at the top of the staircase became the spiritual threshold of the dormitory. Gabriel and Marie meet under an almost bare loggia whose columns, vaults and light extend real architecture. The image does not simulate a distant world: it seems to inhabit the same silence as the viewer. In the cells, Crucifixion, Transfiguration, Christ of Outrages and Noli me tangere use simple backgrounds, few figures and slow gestures. Saint Dominic often appears as a witness, offering the brother who occupies the cell a model of contemplation. Sobriety is not poverty, however. Whites, pinks, blues and greens are attuned with finesse, while perspective and volume make the event present. The cycle varies according to the function of the spaces: community places receive larger compositions, cells concentrated images. San Marco thus brings together Medicean commission, Dominican reform and artistic innovation. The museum installed in the former convent today preserves the most important collection of works by Fra Angelico. The selection "Fra Angelico, convent of San Marco" notably compares The Institution of the Eucharist and The Presentation in the Temple. Its reading favors atmosphere.
In San Marco, the fresco does not cover the wall: it opens up additional space in real architecture for silence and contemplation.
