1469/1470 -1543 · Florence, Ghirlandaio and transition to the High Renaissance
Francesco Granacci was born in Florence in 1469 or 1470 and died in 1543. He trained in the studio of Domenico Ghirlandaio at the same time as Michelangelo, with whom he maintained a long friendship. This apprenticeship gave him a taste for readable stories, well-distributed groups and architecture capable of ordering several episodes. Granacci then went through the transition between the Quattrocento and the High Renaissance. He knew the inventions of Fra Bartolomeo, Raphael, Michelangelo and Andrea del Sarto without renouncing a very Florentine narrative clarity. He knew the inventions of Fra Bartolomeo, Raphael, Michelangelo and Andrea del Sarto without renouncing a very Florentine narrative clarity. Around 1515, he painted two scenes for the famous Borgherini room, a set intended to celebrate a marriage through the story of Joseph. Saint John the Baptist giving testimony shows another aspect of his art. The prophet designates or announces Christ within a landscape where secondary figures structure the reception of his words. The gestures form a visual chain and the open decor gives depth without distracting from the message. Granacci prefers calm persuasion to spectacular effect: expression, position and direction of gaze make the testimony intelligible. The "Francesco Granacci" selection notably compares Saint John the Baptist giving testimony. His reading favors the story.
Granacci tells by circulation: a hand designates, a look responds and the landscape opens the space necessary for speech.
