Bright whites, structuring blacks, flat colors and elegance of interiors make Francis Cadell the most worldly and graphic of Scottish colorists.
Francis Campbell Boileau Cadell was born in Edinburgh in 1883. As a teenager, he went to study in Paris at the Académie Julian, then stayed in Munich before returning permanently to Scotland in 1908. This continental training opened him up to impressionism, to Manet and modern research on color. A trip to Venice in 1910 freed his touch and intensified his palette. In Edinburgh, Cadell settled in Georgian New Town and became the painter of an elegant world: women in black, porcelain, flowers, fans, mirrors and lacquered furniture were arranged in light interiors. He gradually removed shadows and simplified the space into large areas. White, cream and black build the architecture of the painting, while a bright pink, green or orange creates the accent. Mobilized during the First World War, he served in France and also created drawings of soldiers and sailors of great vivacity. After 1919, his style became more geometric and more assured. The Lady in Black and Still Life with a Gray Fan showed how silhouette, reflection and object were organized almost like an abstraction. Cadell belongs with Samuel John Peploe, George Leslie Hunter and John Duncan Fergusson to the group of Scottish Colorists. His friendship with Peploe notably nourished his stays in Iona. He discovered the island in 1912 and returned there almost every summer. White rocks, turquoise sea, sand and hills are painted in clear light with increasingly simplified shapes. In Iona, Cows Rock and Mull's Ross, color constructs the landscape as much as it describes it. Elected to the main Scottish artistic institutions in the 1930s, Cadell died in Edinburgh in 1937.
