Deep shadows, close bodies, kissing gestures and spiritual light make Ribalta the great precursor of Baroque naturalism in Valencia.
Francisco Ribalta was born in 1565 in Solsona, Catalonia. His first training took place in the environment of the Escorial, where he discovered the Spanish and Italian artists gathered for the great royal project. He assimilated the gravity of Bartolomé Carducho, the shortcuts of Pellegrino Tibaldi, the drama of Navarrete and the chiaroscuro games of Luca Cambiaso. Active in Madrid between around 1585 and 1598, he painted religious subjects and portraits before settling in Valencia in 1599, probably attracted by the commissions of Archbishop Juan de Ribera. He remained there until his death. The first Valencian works retained scholarly compositions, but Ribalta gradually moved towards them towards a more direct naturalism. Contact with Caravaggesque novelties, probably known through works and intermediaries rather than through a certain Italian journey, reinforces the dark backgrounds, the concentrated lighting and the close framing. Saint Francis kissing Christ on the cross constitutes his most famous image. Christ physically detaches himself from the cross to surround the saint; homespun, wood, flesh and embrace abolish the distance between vision and reality; this incarnate mysticism characterizes Ribalta. Mary Magdalene in front of the tomb where the dead Christ supported by two angels make gesture and light the immediate vehicles of emotion. Ribalta directs one important workshop with his son Juan and Vicente Castelló. He worked for colleges, parishes and Carthusians, notably the large altarpiece of Portaceli in recent years. His late style achieved a monumental simplicity which profoundly influenced Valencian painting and prepared Ribera's dark research.
