After initial learning, he joined the workshop of Gerard Dou, founder of the tradition of fijnschilders, the fine painters of Leiden. Dou considers him one of his most brilliant students. Van Mieris favors small wooden panels on which a smooth construction makes the traces of the brush almost invisible.
