1703 -1761 · Austrian baroque, cabinet painting and elegant companies
Franz Christoph Janneck was born in Graz in 1703 into a family linked to painting. After initial training in his hometown, he moved to Vienna in 1726 and studied with Jacob van Schuppen at the new Imperial Academy. He completed his training in Frankfurt, particularly in the field of landscape. Janneck specialized in small format cabinet paintings intended for collectors: elegant societies, garden parties, palace interiors, mythological scenes, landscapes and religious episodes. The precision of the brush allows him to differentiate fabrics, gilding, marbles, foliage and tiny gestures without weighing down the composition. His universe dialogues with that of Johann Georg Platzer and with the tradition of gallant festivals, but retains a narrative density specific to Austrian Baroque. The groups are often distributed between monumental architecture and landscape escapes, as on a stage where each conversation becomes a short story. His reputation earned him teaching genre painting at the Vienna Academy and directing it in the early 1750s. He died in Vienna in 1761. His works, long sought after in aristocratic cabinets, are today preserved notably at the Belvedere and in several large collections in Central Europe. The "Franz Christoph Janneck" selection is particularly similar Elegant company in a palace. Its reading favors the story.
Janneck transforms the small painting into a habitable palace: each fabric, column and conversation enlarges the space of the gaze.
