1826 -1900 · Hudson River School, science trip and spectacular landscape
Frederic Edwin Church was born in Hartford in 1826. From 1844 to 1846, he studied in the studio of Thomas Cole, founder of the Hudson River School. He learned to construct vast landscapes from studies taken on the motif, but quickly developed a more geographical and scientific ambition. Alexander von Humboldt's writings encouraged him to travel across equatorial America. Church traveled to Colombia in 1853 then to Ecuador in 1857, observing vegetation, geology, light and volcanoes with precision nourished by drawing and oil study. Niagara then The Heart of the Andes established his international fame. Presented as true spectacles, his large canvases offer to the public an immersion where the accuracy of details combines with an ideal composition. Church then explores Labrador and the ice of the North, Jamaica, Mexico, the Near East, the Mediterranean and Athens. Aurora Borealis transforms the celestial phenomenon into a historical and spiritual vision. Chimborazo and Cotopaxi bring together several observations in coherent panoramas, while Passing Averses in the Tropics makes the rainbow an architecture of light. From 1870, Church designed Olana, her house overlooking the Hudson, as an inhabited landscape and a global work. Arthritis gradually limited its practice, without interrupting its role as collector or traveler and founder of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. He died in New York in 1900. His work unites art, exploration, science, faith and visual spectacle. The "Frederic Edwin Church" selection notably compares Aurora Borealis and Chimborazo. His reading favors atmosphere.
Church does not copy a place: it assembles the experience of travel so that the landscape becomes proof, spectacle and revelation at the same time.
