1855 -1917 · Australian Impressionism, Heidelberg School and Bush Stories
Frederick McCubbin was born in Melbourne in 1855, during the gold rush. The son of a baker, he worked in the family business while attending the Artisan's School of Design, then entered the National Gallery School in 1877. He studied with Eugene von Guérard and George Folingsby, alongside Tom Roberts. When Roberts returned from Europe in 1885, the two artists organized outdoor painting excursions to Box Hill, Mentone then Heidelberg. With Arthur Streeton, Charles Conder, Jane Sutherland and Clara Southern, they sought a way adapted to light, colors and Australian spaces. McCubbin, however, retained a strong narrative ambition. His large compositions place characters in a dense bush where recent history, work, loss and memory can be read across the landscape. Burial in the bush, painted in 1890, brings together a small group around an isolated tomb. The eucalyptus trees, the clear earth and the silence give the rite a collective gravity. This type of image also contributes to the colonial and nationalist stories of his time; today it must be considered carefully for what it shows about settler society as well as for the indigenous presences and stories it leaves off-camera. In 1888, McCubbin became a master of the National Gallery's School of Design and trained several artists important. He frequently used his family as a model and continued portraits, landscapes and domestic scenes. His only trip to Europe, in 1907, exposed him directly to the Impressionists and released his late, clearer and more fragmented touch. He died in Melbourne in 1917, after helping to define a specifically Australian modern painting. The "Frederick McCubbin" selection notably compares Burial in the Bush. His reading favors figures.
McCubbin makes the bush a space of memory: light, trees and figures together tell the story of the colonial experience, its myths and its silences.
