Realism, the outdoors and modern spirituality
Fritz von Uhde was born in 1848 in Wolkenburg, Saxony. Very early attracted by the drawing and images of Adolph Menzel, he nevertheless followed a military career before abandoning the army in 1877 to become a painter. After an attempted training in Munich, he moved to Paris and the studio of Mihály Munkácsy. His first paintings adopted historical subjects and dark genre scenes. After an attempt at training in Munich, he moved to Paris and the studio of Mihály Munkácsy. His first paintings adopted historical subjects and dark genre scenes. A stay in the Netherlands then transformed his painting: in contact with natural light, rural life and the research of Max Liebermann, his palette became clearer and his touch became freer. Installed in Munich, Uhde developed a work situated between realism and impressionism. His singularity holds especially in its contemporary religious scenes. Christ appears in modest houses, with workers, peasants or children dressed like his contemporaries. This updating of the biblical story shocks part of the public, but it gives spirituality a new human closeness. Uhde also paints his family, notably his three daughters, gardens, interiors and scenes of return or journey. He also participated in the founding of the Munich Secession and contributed to the development of the outdoors in Germany. Coming home, an active work in this collection, sums up his interest in simple movement, community and the light that accompanies ordinary life. There selection "Fritz von Uhde" notably features Coming Home. His reading favors figures.
Uhde does not separate the sacred from everyday life: a door, a path or a table become the places of a human and spiritual presence.
