Fyodor Andreyevich Bronnikov was born in Chadrinsk in 1827 into the family of an icon painter, who gave him his first lessons. Orphaned at sixteen, he went to Saint Petersburg and first worked for the wood engraver Evstafy Bernardsky. Noticed by the sculptor Pyotr Clodt, he was able to take courses at the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts, then became a regular student of Alexei Markov. In 1853, a large gold medal opened a study stay in Italy. Bronnikov settled in Rome, whose ruins, inhabitants and light became the enduring center of his work. He observes Antiquity not as an abstract setting, but as a world of rites, moral decisions and tensions humans. Anthem of the Pythagoreans in the rising sun unites Italian landscape, group in procession and philosophical ideal. Horace lit his poems before Patron and Reading the Death Sentence to Thrasea Paetus give to Roman history a clear dramaturgy, constructed by gestures and looks. During a return to Russia between 1863 and 1865, the Academy granted him the title of professor for a composition devoted to Horace. His meeting with the artists protesters who would form the Ambulants expanded his painting to contemporary subjects. Member of the group from 1873, he sent scenes of peasants, streets and work from Italy, sometimes crossed by social criticism. The Cursed Field, dedicated to the violence of ancient slavery, thus combines erudition and modern indignation. Rue in Italy shows the other side of his art: light, architecture and daily presence. Died near Rome in 1902, Bronnikov bequeathed Chadrinsk more than three hundred paintings, sketches and drawings, which became the core of the artistic department of the local museum. The "Fyodor Bronnikov" selection notably compares the Anthem of the Pythagoreans and Horace in front of Patron. His reading favors space.
Bronnikov makes Antiquity present: behind the toga and the stone he seeks moral decision, injustice and ordinary life.
