Fyodor Stepanovich Rokotov was born around 1735 in the Vorontsovo estate, near Moscow, probably into a family of serfs linked to the Repnin princes. Noticed by the patron Ivan Shuvalov, he was called to Saint Petersburg when the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts was formed. He studied, taught and obtained the title of academician there in 1765. His first commissions concerned the court: Peter III, Catherine II, the young Grand Duke Paul and numerous dignitaries posed before him. Installed permanently in Moscow from 1765, he developed a more intimate way, sought after by the enlightened nobility. THE faces emerge from a brown, green or gray background, the contours dissolve, the fabrics are suggested by a few shards and the gaze retains a dark side. This light material, made of transparent passages and almost smoky touches, gives the models a mobile presence. Social identity remains visible in the order of ribbon, pearl or silk, but the painting is mainly attached to hesitation, intelligence or melancholy. The Portrait of Alexandra Struyskaya has become the emblem of this silent psychology. Surrounded by an active workshop, Rokotov produces numerous portraits while maintaining a quality that is difficult to attribute with certainty, because there are few works are signed. He died in Moscow in 1808. His art transformed aristocratic portraiture into an interior space and announced Russian romantic sensibility.
