Gabriel Metsu was born in Leiden in 1629, a few months after the death of his father Jacques, painter and tapestry designer. His precocity is remarkable: a document designates him as a painter in 1644, and he becomes independent master of the guild of Saint-Luc de Leiden in 1648. His exact training remains unknown. His early work, painted with a broad and fluid touch, maintains relationships with Nicolaus Knüpfer and Jan Baptist Weenix more than with the meticulousness of Gerrit Dou, long considered his master. In Leiden, Metsu tackles biblical subjects, markets, taverns and popular scenes. Installed in Amsterdam around 1655, he adapted his art to the taste of a wealthier urban clientele. The interiors become refined, the clothes sumptuous and the story more ambiguous. He married Isabella de Wolff in 1658 and obtained citizenship of Amsterdam the following year. Metsu then observed the innovations of Gerard ter Borch, Pieter de Hooch and Johannes Vermeer, without losing the liveliness of his touch. Man writing a letter and Woman reading a letter form a famous couple: objects, paintings within painting, light and gestures connect two spaces separated by waiting. In The Sick Child, the domestic scene takes on an almost sacred gravity; the mother and child discreetly evoke a Pietà. The cook, conversely, raises an ordinary activity through the concentration of gesture and the truth of materials. Metsu masters metal, fur, satin, ceramics and light while leaving the outcome of his stories open. Died in Amsterdam in 1667 at only thirty-eight years old, he enjoyed immense fame in the 18th and 19th centuries. His ability to unite material virtuosity, emotion and suspense made him one of the great Dutch genre painters.
