Bologna, 1734 -1802 · Mythological theater and character study
Gaetano Gandolfi was born in San Matteo della Decima in 1734 and died in Bologna in 1802. With his brother Ubaldo, he renewed the great Bolognese tradition in the 18th century by assimilating the color, shortcuts and energy of the Tiepolo. He paints altarpieces, ceiling decorations, mythological subjects, drawings and character studies. The Sacrifice of Iphigenia, dated 1789, is an oil on canvas measuring 68.3 × 45.7 cm preparatory to a ceiling of the Palazzo Gnudi Scagliarini in Bologna. At the culmination of Euripides' story, Artemis appears and substitutes a doe for Agamemnon's daughter. The bold shortcuts compress the figures into a structure made to be seen at height. Head of a bishop, around 1770, on the contrary, is a character study of 46.7 × 37.8 cm. It is not an official portrait: beard, collar and expression give the painter the opportunity to freely explore a physiognomy with a lively touch. The "Gaetano Gandolfi" selection notably compares The Sacrifice of Iphigenia and Head of a Bishop. His reading favors movement.
On the ceiling, the body becomes shortened and theater; in the study, a few brushstrokes are enough to reveal a character.
