Born in Antwerp in 1584, Gaspard de Crayer trained in Brussels with Raphaël Coxie and became master of the guild of Saint-Luc in 1607. A history painter and portrait painter, he worked for the elites of the southern Netherlands, became a painter court of Cardinal Infante Ferdinand in 1635, then retained this function under Archduke Leopold-Guillaume. Installed in Ghent in 1644, he distributed a personal version of the great Flemish style: robust figures, generous draperies and an immediately readable story.
