Georges de Feure was born in Paris in 1868 under the name Georges Joseph van Sluijters, a Dutch father and a Belgian mother. After a childhood shared between France and the Netherlands, he returned to Paris and chose an artist's name. Largely self-taught, he frequented the Chat Noir cabaret and symbolist circles. His first paintings and prints featured elegant, melancholic or menacing women in interiors where line, motif and atmosphere take precedence over the story. Return belongs to this universe: silhouette, compressed space and psychological ambiguity transform a daily scene into a symbolist image. De Feure quickly becomes an illustrator and poster designer. The poster for the Salon des Cent in 1897 combines female figures, solid areas, arabesques and typography in a composition designed to be seen in the street while retaining the refinement of a print. His career changed scale thanks to the dealer Siegfried Bing. The Maison de l'Art Nouveau, opened in 1895, promoted a total creation capable of uniting furniture, textiles, glass, ceramics and graphics. For Bing's pavilion at the 1900 Universal Exhibition, de Feure designed several complete pieces. Armchair, wallpaper, lighting, rugs and display case then shared the same rhythms, realizing the ideal of Gesamtkunstwerk. Appointed director of the design department of Bing, he collaborates with porcelain, goldsmithing and furniture manufacturers. After 1901, his own workshop gave him more independence. He then became interested in automobiles and aviation, wrote and worked for the theater, then returned to interior decor in the 1920s. Died in Paris in 1943, de Feure left a work that spans painting, posters and objects, always guided by the unity of the line and the environment.
