1641 -1711 · Dutch classicism, allegory and theory of painting
Gérard de Lairesse was born in Liège in 1641 into a family of artists and received his first training from his father, then from Bertholet Flémal. After an eventful start, he moved to Amsterdam around 1665. His drawing, his erudition and his taste for Antiquity quickly brought him commissions from merchants, regents and institutions. In a Dutch Republic often associated with portraiture, landscape or genre scenes, de Lairesse defended history painting as the pinnacle of art. Mythology, Bible and allegory allowed him to organize the body, gesture and architecture according to an ideal of beauty and convenience. Apollo and Aurora combine chariots, clouds and light emerging in an ascending movement; Hercules between Vice and Virtue transforms moral choice into a confrontation of postures. Abraham receiving the three angels and Jesus celebrating Passover show the same search for narrative clarity in biblical subjects. De Lairesse also designed vast settings for patrician houses, ceilings and institutions, where several scenes were to form a coherent program. Around 1690, syphilis made him blind. He stopped painting but pursued a second career as a lecturer and theorist. His teachings, collected in particular in Het Groot Schilderboek published in 1707, exposed the rules of composition, costume and expression and the hierarchy of genres. Much admired in the 18th century, he was then eclipsed by the taste for Rembrandt, whose naturalism seemed opposed to his classical ideal. Died in Amsterdam in 1711, de Lairesse nevertheless remains essential for understanding the scholarly, decorative and theoretical culture of the end of the Golden Age. The "Gérard de Lairesse" selection nevertheless remains essential for understanding the scholarly, decorative and theoretical culture of the end of the Golden Age. The "Gérard de Lairesse" selection notably compares Apollo and Aurora and Abraham receiving the three angels. His reading favors space.
De Lairesse treats painting as an art of eloquence: the body, the decor and the light must make the idea as clear as a well-constructed speech.
