Born in Tilburg in 1746, Gérard van Spaendonck trained in Antwerp with Willem Jacob Herreyns before settling in Paris around 1770. His talent for flowers quickly opened the way for him: he became a miniature painter to Louis XVI, then a professor of floral painting at the King's Garden. Roses, peonies, tulips, irises, fruits, nests and insects are placed in abundant bouquets where each species remains identifiable.
