1621 -1674 · Amsterdam, Rembrandt's workshop and biblical story
Gerbrand van den Eeckhout was born in Amsterdam in 1621 into a wealthy family linked to commerce and goldsmithing. Around the mid-1630s, he entered Rembrandt's studio and probably remained there until around 1640. He assimilated chiaroscuro, oriental costumes, biblical groups and the way of conducting the gaze through light. Van den Eeckhout, however, did not limit himself to imitating his master. He painted sacred stories, portraits, genre scenes and landscapes, produced numerous drawings and designed ornaments for goldsmithing and prints. In Isaac blessing Jacob, the proximity of bodies, genre scenes and landscapes, produced numerous drawings and designed ornaments for goldsmithing and prints. In Isaac blessing Jacob, the proximity of bodies, genre scenes and landscapes, produced numerous drawings and designed ornaments for goldsmithing and prints. In Isaac blessing Jacob, the proximity of bodies, groping hands and warm light make visible the moment when the blessing is obtained by substitution. Anna presenting her son Samuel to the high priest Eli organizes the architecture and figures around the offering gesture, with a narrative clarity specific to Van den Eeckhout. A musical part shows his parallel interest in elegant sociability: instruments, costume and conversation build a less dark and more worldly interior. His pen, wash and sometimes black stone drawings preserve for a long time the free movement learned in Rembrandt. The Rijksmuseum particularly highlights the freedom of his studies of figures with a brush. Van den Eeckhout also draws cartridges and goldsmithing objects, a familiar field in the sound profession father. This versatility explains a large corpus where attributions have sometimes been confused with Rembrandt, Ferdinand Bol or other members of the workshop. Staying in Amsterdam, he maintained links with his former master and developed an independent career until his death in 1674. His work shows how a student can extend a workshop tradition while adapting it to the narrative and decorative taste of the next generation. The "Gerbrand van den Eeckhout" selection notably compares Isaac blessing Jacob and Anna presenting Samuel to Eli. His reading favors figures.
Van den Eeckhout inherits Rembrandt's light, but he uses it to clarify the story: an enlightened hand is enough to reveal the decision at the heart of the scene.
