Golden light, narrative gestures, biblical figures and free drawings make Gerbrand van den Eeckhout one of Rembrandt's most faithful and versatile heirs.

Gerbrand van den Eeckhout was born in Amsterdam in 1621 into a wealthy family linked to commerce and goldsmithing. Around the mid-1630s, he entered Rembrandt's studio and probably remained there until around 1640. He assimilated chiaroscuro, oriental costumes, biblical groups and the way of conducting the gaze through light. Van den Eeckhout, however, did not limit himself to imitating his master. He painted sacred stories, portraits, genre scenes and landscapes, produced numerous drawings and designed ornaments for goldsmithing and prints. This versatility explains a large corpus where attributions have sometimes been confused with Rembrandt, Ferdinand Bol or other members of the workshop. Staying in Amsterdam, he maintained links with his former master and developed an independent career until his death in 1674. His work shows how a student can extend a workshop tradition while adapting it to the narrative and decorative taste of the next generation. Van den Eeckhout inherits Rembrandt's light, but he uses it to clarify the story: an enlightened hand is enough to reveal the decision at the heart of the scene.
