Giovanni Francesco Barbieri was born in Cento in 1591. His nickname, Guercino - "the little ladle" - comes from a strabismus that appeared in childhood. Coming from a modest and largely self-taught background, he studied the works of Ludovico with passion Carracci visible in his region. Its beginnings are characterized by vigorous naturalism: close figures, sudden gestures, deep shadows and unstable light give the religious scenes an almost meteorological intensity. In 1617, he founded a nude academy in Cento and quickly attracted the attention of Cardinal Alessandro Ludovisi. When he became pope under the name Gregory XV, Guercino was called to Rome in 1621. In two years, he created works majors, including L'Aurore at the Ludovisi Casino and the immense Burial of Saint Petronilla. The death of the pope in 1623 brought him back to Cento. His style then gradually evolved towards a clearer composition, a more equal light and a classicism close to Guido Reni, without losing the narrative force of the gesture. Guercino excels at making hands and eyes speak. In The Resurrection of Lazarus, astonishment, retreat and the call of Christ immediately render the miracle visible. The Incredulity of Saint Thomas focuses faith on contact and examination. And in Arcadia ego, a youthful work, confronts shepherds with a skull and the inscription reminding us that death inhabits even Arcadia. After the death of Guido Reni in 1642, Guercino moved to Bologna and became the city's dominant painter. His studio is remarkably organized; his account book documents orders and payments. A tireless designer, he covers leaves pen, wash and chalk of rapid inventions, faces and shortcuts. Died in 1666, he left a work which links Emilian naturalism, baroque theater and classical clarity.
