Gerolamo, or Girolamo, Induno was born in Milan in 1825. He studied at the Brera Academy with Luigi Sabatelli and worked near his older brother Domenico, also a painter. The revolutions of 1848 disrupted his career. Induno participated in the Five Days of Milan then took refuge in Switzerland before joining Rome, where he defended the Roman Republic of 1849 and was injured. He then accompanied the Risorgimento campaigns as a fighter, witness and painter, notably in Crimea then in the wars of independence and around Garibaldi. This direct experience distinguishes his military scenes. The Battle of Magenta or The capture of Palestro are not limited to strategy and uniforms: fatigue, injury, waiting and solidarity give a human scale to the national event.
