Born in Haarlem in 1638, Gerrit Berckheyde probably learned from his older brother Job. The two artists traveled to Germany and stayed in Cologne and Heidelberg, where Gerrit worked for the court of the Elector Palatine. Back in the Netherlands, he entered the guild of Saint Luke of Haarlem in 1660. He then specialized in a still young genre: urban view. The Grote Markt, the Saint-Bavon church, the curves of the Herengracht and the squares of The Hague are represented with clear architecture, rigorous perspective and light that cuts through the facades.
