1613 -1675 · Fijnschilder of Leiden
Born in Leiden in 1613 into the family of a glassmaker and glass engraver, Gerrit Dou learned drawing, engraving and surface work very early on. In 1628, at fourteen, he entered the young Rembrandt's studio and stayed there for about three years. His first figures share the warm light and the master's models. After Rembrandt left for Amsterdam, Dou developed an increasingly precise manner: small panels, smooth surface, fine brushes and the meticulous illusion of furs, metal, glass, feathers and skin. After Rembrandt's departure for Amsterdam, Dou developed an increasingly precise manner: small panels, smooth surface, fine brushes and the meticulous illusion of furs, metal, glass, feathers and skin. He popularized scenes seen through a window or a stone niche, a device that both separates and brings together the painted world. Doctors, merchants, cooks, hermits, readers and musicians perform simple gestures surrounded by objects full of allusions. Founder of the guild of Saint-Luc de Leiden in 1648 and leader of the fijnschilders, Dou enjoyed immense European success. His works reached exceptional prices and influenced Frans van Mieris, Godfried Schalcken and several generations of meticulous painters. The "Gerrit Dou" selection notably compares Self-portrait. His reading favors drawing.
At Dou, the tiny becomes monumental: each reflection, wrinkle and fabric thread contributes to the perfect illusion.
