Giacinto Brandi was born in 1621, probably in Gaeta, and died in Rome in 1691. After a brief stint with the sculptor Alessandro Algardi, he studied with Giovanni Giacomo Semici, stayed in Naples in 1638 then joined Giovanni Lanfranco's entourage in Rome. His language combines the momentum of Lanfranco, the theatricality of Peter of Cortona and a darker emotion, before integrating the measure of Carlo Maratta. Elected prince of the Accademia di San Luca in 1668, Brandi became a major player in Roman painting; several of his works were sent to Spain between 1666 and 1671. The Prodigal Son presented in this collection, however, required clarification: the current catalog of the Prado described as an anonymous copy after Giovanni Lanfranco, formerly close to Brandi. This revised attribution does not erase its interest: the canvas documents the visual filiation in which Brandi was formed, with close figures, dramatic light and the return of the son transformed into an emotional encounter.
