Giovanni Battista Piazzetta was born in Venice in 1682. His sculptor father gave him initial training, then he probably attended Antonio Molinari's studio before staying in Bologna. The painting of Giuseppe Maria Crespi, the naturalism of the Carracci and the chiaroscuro of Guercino profoundly determined his language there. Returning to Venice around 1710, Piazzetta distinguished himself from the luminous decorators of his generation by dense shadows, powerful figures and careful observation of popular models. His religious subjects, such as the Assumption or Saint Philip Neri in prayer, combine fervor, restrained gestures and dramatic lighting. His pastoral and genre scenes show young women, boys, shepherds and fortune tellers with unusual monumentality. The faces emerge from the brown, the whites catch the light and the warm colors remain concentrated. Piazzetta is also one of the great Venetian designers. His charcoal and chalk study heads, highly sought after by collectors, give expressions a gentle and immediate presence. He also provided numerous drawings for the illustrated edition, notably Jerusalem Delivered from the Cup. His art influenced young Tiepolo before he adopted a lighter palette. Recognized by his peers, Piazzetta became the first director of the short story in 1750 nude school of the Venetian Academy. Died in 1754, he left a work where the rococo retains the weight of the body, the depth of shadow and a profoundly human truth.
