High horizons, fantastic rocks and distant blues make Joachim Patinier one of the first great European landscape specialists.

Joachim Patinier, a common French form called Joachim Patinir, was probably born around 1480 near Dinant, on the Meuse. He may have worked in Bruges before being registered as a master at the guild of Saint Luke of Antwerp in 1515. Albrecht Dürer, who met him during his trip to the Netherlands in 1520 -1521, called him a good landscape painter and attended his daughter's wedding. In his paintings, the religious subject remains indispensable but changes scale. Baptism of Christ, Flight into Egypt, preaching of Saint John the Baptist or penance of Saint Jerome occupy a limited portion of an immense territory. Sharp rocks, winding rivers, villages, ports and mountains lead the gaze towards a very high horizon. Color often organizes the world into brown areas in the foreground, green in the middle and blue in the distance. This panoramic landscape, sometimes called the landscape of the world, brings together real sites, memories of the Mosan valley and symbolic inventions. The earthly journey becomes an image of the spiritual journey. Patinier collaborated with other masters, notably Quentin Metsys, who is said to have painted certain figures.
