Giovanni Battista Tiepolo was born in Venice in 1696 and trained with Gregorio Lazzarini. His beginnings revealed the dark influence of Piazzetta, Federico Bencovich and Venetian Baroque, but he soon turned to the light color and scale of Veronese. From the 1720s, his frescoes in Udine, then his commissions in Milan, Bergamo and Venice imposed spectacular language. His specialty is illusionist space seen from below: balustrades, columns and clouds extend the real architecture, while the figures seem to float in a limitless sky. With the quadraturist Gerolamo Mengozzi Colonna, he composed settings where perspective, light and movement become inseparable. Between 1750 and 1753, accompanied by his sons Giovanni Domenico and Lorenzo, he created one of the peaks of the 18th century at the Würzburg Residence. The immense fresco on the staircase represents the continents around Apollo and transforms the vault into a theater of the world. Back in Venice, he directed the Academy and continued international activity. Called in 1762 by Charles III of Spain, he decorated the Royal Palace of Madrid and worked there until his death in 1770. His religious subjects can be luminous and triumphant, like the Immaculate Conception, or deeply dramatic, like the Martyrdom of saint Bartholomew. His oil models and rapid drawings show continued invention; his engraved work by Capricci and Scherzi explores a more enigmatic vein.
