Norfolk's oaks, sandy paths and rivers make John Crome the founder of a sober, attentive and deeply local English landscape.

John Crome was born in Norwich in 1768 in a modest environment. After an apprenticeship with a sign and carriage painter, he largely developed his practice on his own, observing the Norfolk countryside and the Dutch landscapes of the 17th century. A sought-after drawing master, he traveled the estates and villages around Norwich with his students. In 1803, he helped found the Norwich Society of Artists, the first sustainable provincial arts association in Britain.
