John Henry Twachtman was born in Cincinnati in 1853 into a family of German origin. He learned the basics from his father, a blind decorator, took evening classes then studied with Frank Duveneck. In Munich, his first manner became dark, thick and heavily constructed; a stay in Venice with Duveneck and William Merritt Chase freed his gaze from water and light. In the 1880s, Twachtman worked in Paris and Normandy. Arques-la-Bataille revealed an almost abstract organization of paths, fields and rivers, given to a muffled palette. From 1889, he taught at the Art Students League of New York and tirelessly painted his property in Greenwich, in Connecticut. Waterfalls, bridges, snow and streams change with the seasons. The Emerald Pool and Stream in winter do not only describe a site: their close values make you feel humidity, silence and temperature. A member of the Ten American Painters, Twachtman spent his last summers in Gloucester, where boats and docks awakened his color. He died there in 1902, leaving a modern landscape based on repeated familiarity with a few places. The "John Henry Twachtman" selection notably compares Arques-la-Bataille and Ruisseau in winter.
Twachtman returns to the same stream until snow, water and air cease to be separate objects and become a single sensation.
