John Frederick Peto was born in Philadelphia in 1854. Largely self-taught, he nevertheless took classes at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in 1877 and attended William Michael Harnett, another great American master of trompe l'oeil. Both painted letters, books, instruments and hanging objects with precision capable of deceiving the eye, but Peto soon favored aged surfaces and signs of use.
