1825 -1908 · Livorno, Florence and the Macchiaioli revolution
Giovanni Fattori was born in Livorno in 1825. After initial local training with Giuseppe Baldini, he moved to Florence in 1846 and studied with Giuseppe Bezzuoli at the Academy. His beginnings remain linked to history painting, but attending Caffè Michelangiolo brings him closer to the artists who will form the Macchiaioli group. They wanted to renew Italian painting through direct observation and macchia: clear relationships of shadow, light and color constructed the motif before detail. In 1859, encouraged by Nino Costa, Fattori participated in a competition dedicated to the battles of the Risorgimento. In 1859, encouraged by Nino Costa, Fattori participated in a competition devoted to the battles of the Risorgimento. His Italian Field after the Battle of Magenta, completed in 1862, avoids spectacular heroism. Soldiers, wounded and ambulances are shown after the fight, in a clear light that emphasizes fatigue and the human consequence of history. Fattori continues this look in numerous military scenes: cavalry, sentries, bivouacs and marching columns. He also paints Maremma, peasants, oxen, horses and the Tuscan coast. Small, quick panels sometimes reduce a landscape to a few perfectly balanced bands of color. In Castiglioncello, with the critic Diego Martelli, he delved deeper into the outdoors and produced portraits of great sobriety. Professor at the Academy of Florence from 1869, he formed several generations without giving up a modest life. In his last decades, etching became a major medium: energetic bite, deep blacks and rough surfaces reflect soldiers, animals and workers. Died in Florence in 1908, Fattori united Risorgimento, rural life and visual modernity in a work stripped of all rhetoric. The "Giovanni Fattori" selection notably compares The Italian Field after the Battle of Magenta and Diego Martelli in Castiglioncello. His reading favors figures.
Fattori takes away the emphasis to regain the weight of reality: a band of light, a motionless horse or a tired soldier are enough to tell the story.
