Ancona -Bologna, active in the 17th century · Albani, Carracci and copy art
Girolamo Bonini was born in Marche, probably in Ancona, and worked during the second half of the 17th century. Information about his life is rare. A faithful student of Francesco Albani, he collaborated with him in Bologna and Rome, carried out work for churches in Fano and went to Venice after the death of his master. The Birth of the Virgin is the only sure work of his hand preserved in the Prado. Painted in oil on canvas in the second half of the 17th century, it measures 93 × 51 cm. It is not an original invention: Bonini copies a painting by Annibale Carracci created for the basilica of Loreto and today at the Louvre. The terrestrial scene of childbirth is topped by the Eternal Father and the angels, bringing together domestic intimacy and celestial plane. From the collection of Carlo Maratti, it was acquired by Philip V and entered La Granja. The "Girolamo Bonini" selection notably compares The Birth of the Virgin. His reading favors the material.
Bonini's copy does not erase Carracci: it preserves his invention, documents its circulation and reveals learning through fidelity.
