Avignon, 1714 - Paris, 1789 · Sea, light and port life

Sorrento, cave, fishermen and nets make up a lived Mediterranean where the luminous horizon dialogues with human work and the power of the elements.

Claude-Joseph Vernet was born in Avignon in 1714 and reached Rome in 1734. For nearly twenty years in Italy, he observed ports, gulfs, rocky coasts, changing light and the activity of fishermen. He does not copy a site like a topographer: he combines true motifs to build a credible, orderly and emotional nature. The calm marines display a golden light where boats and figures punctuate the space; on the contrary, storms and shipwrecks show human fragility in the face of the elements. Back in France in 1753, Vernet received from Louis XV the commission for the Ports of France, a monumental series which combines precision of places, commerce and national spectacle. Both works gathered here, a view of Sorrento and a port scene dominated by a cave. In the first, the Italian coast becomes an architecture of light. In the second, fishermen transport their nets under a rock mass that frames the sea. One opens the horizon, the other looks at it from the shadows: together, they summarize Vernet's ability to connect landscape, profession and atmosphere. At Vernet, the sea is never empty: it carries the light, measures the rock and gives the fishermen's gestures their rightful place.
