1615 -1660 · Cleves, Leeuwarden and Amsterdam
Govert Flinck was born in Cleves in 1615. Intended primarily for the silk trade, he imposed his desire to become a painter and left to train in Leeuwarden with Lambert Jacobsz, in the company of Jacob Backer. Around 1633, he joined Amsterdam and Rembrandt's studio, then associated with the merchant Hendrick van Uylenburgh. Flinck quickly assimilated the master's manner: concentrated light, brown backgrounds, impasto, orientalizing costumes and strong psychological presence. His first portraits and biblical scenes were sometimes confused with those of Rembrandt. However, he did not remain an imitator. From the 1640s, his style became clearer under the influence of Bartholomeus van der Helst, by Rubens and the more classic taste of official sponsors. The colors become sharper, the contours more regular and the compositions more open. This development fostered a brilliant career with the bourgeoisie, civic companies and the House of Orange. Flinck painted individual portraits, groups, allegories and vast stories intended for public buildings. Bearded man with a velvet cap retains the Rembranesque taste for material and the study of character. A bearded man with a velvet cap retains the Rembranesque taste for material and the study of character. A young woman as a shepherdess belongs to the fashion of pastoral portraiture, where costume and poetic role transform the model without erasing her identity. An angel announcing to shepherds the birth of Christ shows his aptitude for nocturnal storytelling and miraculous light, while his landscapes reveal more diverse activity. In 1659, Flinck received a major commission for twelve large paintings for Amsterdam's new city hall. His sudden death in 1660 prevented him from completing the program. Her trajectory sums up a generation: formed by Rembrandt, she adapts her intensity to the monumental clarity and civic prestige of the Dutch Golden Age. The "Govert Flinck" selection notably compares A Young Woman as a Shepherdess and a Bearded Man with a Velvet Cap. His reading favors color.
Flinck learns from Rembrandt to bring out a shadow presence, then opens the light to respond to the public, civic and classical scale of Amsterdam.
