1870 -1924 · Rennes, Écouen and Paris
Guillaume Seignac was born in Rennes in 1870 into a family of painters linked to the artistic colony of Écouen. He trained in Paris at the Académie Julian and in the workshops of Tony Robert-Fleury, Gabriel Ferrier and especially William-Adolphe Bouguereau. This teaching places the drawing of the human body at the center of practice: anatomical study, living model, composition, glazing and finishing must make the figure as precise as it is idealized. Seignac remains faithful to this tradition at the very moment when impressionism, symbolism and avant-gardes transformed French art. From 1897, he exhibited regularly at the Salon des artistes français, of which he became a member in 1901. A mention honorable in 1900 then a third class medal in 1903 confirmed his institutional recognition. His favorite subjects come from mythology, allegory and a dreamed Antiquity. Nymphs, muses, Venus, Psyche and Diana allow him to paint the female nude in poses inspired by Greek sculpture, the Renaissance and contrapposto. Transparent draperies reveal as much as they dress; Mediterranean marbles, fountains and landscapes build a timeless world. In Diana the Huntress, the bow, movement and determination distinguish the goddess from figures abandoned at rest. The Odalisques move the academic ideal towards an Orient imagination made of fabrics, fans and controlled sensuality. Seignac also knows how to respond to contemporary history, as in his patriotic allegories of the First World War. Its smooth finish conceals the stages of the work and gives the flesh an almost sculptural continuity. Died in Paris in 1924, he represents the active persistence of academicism: far from being a simple delay, his work responds to the international market and the lasting desire for classic, narrative and immediately readable beauty. The "Guillaume Seignac" selection notably compares Odalisque and Odalisque to the fan. His reading favors color.
Seignac maintains the academic ideal in the age of the avant-gardes: drawing governs, touch disappears and the body becomes the polished surface of a timeless myth.
