Gustave Clarence Rodolphe Boulanger was born in Paris in 1824. A young orphan, he entered the School of Fine Arts in 1840 and trained in the workshops of Pierre-Jules Jollivet then Paul Delaroche. A first trip to Algeria, in 1845, lastingly fueled his interest in North Africa, costumes and southern light. He began at the Salon in 1848 and the following year won the Grand Prix de Rome with Ulysses recognized by Euryclée. His stay at the Villa Medici allowed him to study the ruins, settings and material life of Antiquity. As Jean-Léon Gérôme, his friend, Boulanger belonged to the neo-Greek movement: he not only represented the heroes, but imagined the interiors hobbies, rehearsals and ordinary gestures of the Greeks and Romans. The Rehearsal of the Pied Piper and Diomedes' Wife by Prince Napoleon combines erudition, staging and modern distance. Back in Paris, Boulanger received numerous decorative commissions. His friendship with the architect Charles Garnier opened the construction sites of the Paris Opera and the Monte-Carlo casino to him. Portraits, history paintings, ancient scenes and orientalist subjects ensured his regular presence at the Salon. He teaches at the School of Fine Arts and the Académie Julian, where his precise drawing influences several generations of students. Elected to the Institute in 1882, he embodies an academic institution then contested by the new avant-gardes. His scenes from the Commune nevertheless show that he also knows how to approach immediate history. Assault on a cemetery and Episode of the Commune, Place de la Concorde reflect contemporary violence with a gravity very different from his ancient reveries. Boulanger died in Paris in 1888. His work sheds light on the visual culture of the Second Empire and the Third Republic: a painting where historical knowledge, monumental decor and pleasure of spectacle remain inseparable.
