Gyula Benczúr was born in Nyíregyháza in 1844 and grew up in Kassa, today Košice. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich with Hermann Anschütz then Karl von Piloty, master of great history painting. This training gave him a theatrical composition, precise drawing, powerful modeling and a taste for historically documented costumes. Benczúr obtained national recognition with Les Adieux de Laszló Hunyadi then Le Baptisme de Vajk, which combines Christian foundation and Hungarian identity. After a trip to Italy, he worked for the court of Ludwig II of Bavaria and then The Baptism of Vajk, which combines Christian foundation and Hungarian identity. After a trip to Italy, he worked for the court of Ludwig II of Bavaria and painted episodes from the reign of Louis XIV. Professor at the Munich Academy, he returned to Budapest in 1883 to run the new master painting school. His great compositions, notably The Reconquest of Buda Castle in 1686, give national history spectacular breadth. Benczúr also excels in portraiture of aristocrats, prelates and sovereigns, as well as religious and mythological subjects. The Virgin and Child, The Virgin and Rabbit and Christ in the Garden of Olives show how his academic discipline adapts to devout intimacy. His Self-Portrait affirms the dignity of the learned painter. Died in 1920 in Dolány, renamed Benczúrfalva, he leaves a central work for Hungarian historicism and an important teaching heritage. There selection "Gyula Benczúr" notably compares The Virgin and Child Jesus and Self-portrait. His reading favors movement.
Benczúr composes history like an opera stage: architecture, costume, light and gesture converge towards the moment when the national narrative becomes spectacle.
