Born in Istanbul in 1905, Hale Asaf received her first lessons from her aunt Mihri Müsfik, one of the pioneers of Turkish painting, then studied with Namouk izmail in Paris. His training continued in Berlin with Arthur Kampf, in Istanbul with Feyhaman Duran and izbrahim Çallï, in Munich, then at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière in the studio of André Lhote. The following year, she became the only woman among the founding members of the Association of Independent Painters and Sculptors, a determining group for the introduction of post-impressionist and modern trends in Turkey. Installed permanently in Paris in 1932, she participated in the Salon des Tuileries and worked in a difficult material and health context. She died in 1938, at only thirty-three years old. Part of her work was dispersed or lost, but the preserved paintings are enough to show an artist who linked European modernity to a Turkish and deeply individual experience of portraiture.
