Hans Memling was born around 1435 in Seligenstadt, in the Mainz region. The beginnings of his training remain uncertain, but his art reveals a deep knowledge of Rogier van der Weyden, whose rigorous construction, expressive types and precision of oil he took up. Memling was registered as a citizen of Bruges in 1465 and remained there until his death in 1494. The city, a hub of European commerce, brought him a clientele of religious, patricians and foreign merchants, notably Italians. He painted altarpieces, triptychs, devotional diptychs and autonomous portraits. In the Triptych of the Adoration of the Magi, architecture, landscape and groups of figures lead the story without breaking the general harmony.
