1839 -1924 · Black Forest, realism, symbolism and German art
Born in 1839 in Bernau, in the Black Forest, Hans Thoma grew up in a modest environment of artisans. After tests as a lithographer, building painter and decorator of clock faces, he entered the Karlsruhe School of Fine Arts in 1859. A stay in Paris put him in contact with Courbet, whose realism confirmed his interest in landscapes and ordinary figures. Installed in Munich in 1870 then in Frankfurt in 1876, Thoma met Wilhelm Trübner, Wilhelm Leibl, Arnold Böcklin and the theorist Conrad Fiedler. His views of the Black Forest, portraits of his mother and sister, children, peasants and garden scenes combine simple drawing, light color and deep feeling of place. He also develops a symbolist side: faunas, mythological figures, allegories of time and idealized landscapes give nature a spiritual dimension. Long little recognized, he enjoyed national success after an exhibition in Munich in 1890. In 1899, he became director of the Kunsthalle in Karlsruhe and professor at the academy, positions he held for two decades. His immense popularity and his subsequent links with certain nationalist and anti-Semitic circles today make his legacy politically ambivalent. Today, his immense popularity and his subsequent links with certain nationalist and anti-Semitic circles make his legacy politically ambivalent. Examining his work therefore requires holding together the poetic force of landscapes and the ideological context of its reception. The "Hans Thoma" selection offers a specific course on this subject. Its reading favors atmosphere.
In Thoma, the familiar landscape becomes a mental space: the forest, the garden and the daily figure slide gently from realism to myth.
