1588 -1629 · Utrecht, Rome and Dutch Caravaggio
Hendrick Jansz. ter Brugghen was born in 1588, probably in The Hague, and grew up in a Catholic environment in Utrecht. He trained with Abraham Bloemaert, whose powerful design and taste for figure he retained. Around 1604, he left for Rome and remained there for around ten years. Contact with Caravaggio's work profoundly changed his painting: life-size characters, close framing, popular models and directed light gave the story an immediate presence. Returning to Utrecht in 1614, Ter Brugghen became, with Gerrit van Honthorst and Dirck van Baburen, one of the city's main Caravaggios. fresh and a less theatrical emotion. He paints religious scenes, biblical stories and many musicians. The Duo brings the lute player and the singer together until they feel breath, voice and finger contact with the instrument. In Le Mauvais Riche and Lazare, proximity of bodies and opposition of conditions give the parable social strength. Saint Sebastian cared for by Irene transforms martyrdom into a scene of care, attentive to injured skin and compassionate gesture. The Crucifixion with the Virgin and Saint John, exceptionally monumental, transforms martyrdom into a scene of care, attentive to injured skin and compassionate gesture. The Crucifixion with the Virgin and Saint John, exceptionally monumental, combines archaic frontality and Caravaggesque realism. Ter Brugghen died in Utrecht in 1629, at the age of forty-one. Despite a brief career, he played a decisive role in the transfer of Caravaggio's innovations to the Netherlands and had a lasting influence on Dutch figure painting. The "Hendrick ter Brugghen" selection notably compares The Crucifixion with the Virgin and Saint John and The Bad Rich and Lazarus. His reading favors space.
Ter Brugghen brings the subject closer to the point of abolishing distance: the musician breathes before us, the saint suffers in true flesh and the light makes every gesture inevitable.
