1859 -1884 · Portuguese naturalism and Mediterranean light
Born in Vila Viçosa in 1859, Henrique César de Araújo Pousao revealed a talent for pencil portraiture very early on. Installed in Porto, he studied at the Portuguese Academy of Fine Arts and received the influence of Marques de Oliveira, who had recently returned from Paris. Winner of a state pension, Pousao reached the French capital at the end of 1880 with Sousa Pinto. He studied with Alexandre Cabanel and Adolphe Yvon, copied Velazquez and Rembrandt, but also discovered impressionism and the landscape painted on the motif. His fragile health took him to Italy in 1881. Rome, Naples and especially Capri offered him a light that radically transformed his painting. White facades, blue shutters, red walls, narrow stairs and streets are constructed by large geometric masses, sharp shadows and color freed from anecdotal detail. Works like Casas Brancas de Capri or Rua de Capri appear surprisingly modern. Pousao painted figures and scenes of rest at the same time, including Cansada, where pose, fabric and material express fatigue without pathos. Suffering from tuberculosis, he returned to Portugal and died at the age of twenty-five in 1884. The brevity of his career did not prevent his work from becoming a major reference of the first Portuguese naturalist generation. Pousao looks at Capri as a construction of light: a white wall, a blue shadow and a shutter are enough to shift naturalism towards modernity.
