1819 -1916 · French landscape, Corot and light of the Morvan
Born in Valenciennes in 1819 into a family of industrialists, Henri-Joseph Harpignies first destined himself for business before choosing painting late. From the mid-1840s, he studied with the landscaper Jean-Alexis Achard, traveled to Italy and discovered Poussin's legacy as well as Mediterranean light. Back in France, he exhibited at the Salon in 1853. Harpignies carefully observed Corot and the Barbizon painters, but constructed a firmer language, based on the drawing of the trunks, the clarity of the plans and equal light. Anatole France nicknamed him the "Michelangelo of trees", a formula which summarizes the structural place of plants in his paintings. Installed part of the year in Hérisson in Bourbonnais, he also works in Morvan, in Marlotte, on the banks of the Loire and in Italy. His watercolors, admired for their economy, extend his oils with large transparent washes. Chemin des roches in the Morvan combines terrain, trees and depth in a calm progression; Trembleaux fir trees give dark verticals a natural monumentality; Moonrise shifts attention to time, sky and reflections. Harpignies continued an exceptionally long career and remained active almost until his death in 1916. The "Henri-Joseph Harpignies" selection notably compared Chemin des roches in the Morvan and Sapins aux Trembleaux, near Marlotte. His reading favors space.
Harpignies paints the tree as a living architecture: the trunk organizes the path, the foliage filters the light and the landscape finds its measure around it.
