Roman countryside, golden backlights and tiny travelers make Herman van Swanevelt a major ferryman of the classical landscape between Italy, the Netherlands and France.

Herman van Swanevelt was born in Woerden, near Utrecht, in 1603. His initial training remains unknown, but he was documented in Paris in 1623 before moving to Rome, where he worked from the 1620s to 1641. Like many Nordic artists established in Italy, he traveled the countryside, drawing the ruins, valleys, trees and effects of the sun. His taste for solitary excursions earned him the nickname "Hermit" in the Bentvueghels circle. His paintings, drawings and series of etchings widely spread the vocabulary of classical landscape in France and northern Europe.
