Hernando de los Llanos, also named Fernando Llanos, is a Spanish painter whose dates of birth and death remain unknown. The documents first place him in Florence in 1505, in Leonardo da Vinci's entourage. This Italian experience explains the exceptional place occupied in his work by sfumato, meditative faces, misty landscapes and groups constructed by gestures and looks. Back in Spain, he worked closely with Fernando Yáñez de la Almedina. The two artists, whom Valencian sources call "the Hernandos", received in 1506 the monumental commission for the doors of the major altarpiece of Valencia Cathedral. Their collaboration introduces types and solutions directly linked to the Florentine High Renaissance to the peninsula. The attribution of certain paintings between Llanos and Yáñez remains debated, proof of the proximity of their language but also of the collective functioning of the major altarpiece projects. Llanos, however, develops an often denser and more dramatic way. Saints Peter and Paul oppose their characters through faces, gestures and attributes, while maintaining monumental unity. The Virgin and Child with the Lamb, however, takes up a leonardesque theme: the child's play with the animal symbolically announces the Passion, while the landscape and the shadow transitions envelop the scene in softness. The Virgin of the reel belongs to the same network of maternal images where a familiar object receives spiritual meaning. After Valencia, the documents found Llanos in Murcia, where he worked in particular for the cathedral and continued his activity as an altarpiece painter. His journey faded around the 1520s. Despite these shortcomings, his historical role was clear: he did not simply copy Leonardo, but adapted the Italian science of the body, space and emotion to the narrative and devotional needs of Spanish painting.
