Around 1510 - before 1572 · Flemish landscape-world and sacred story
Active in the second quarter of the 16th century, Herri met de Bles was probably born near Dinant, in the southern Netherlands, around 1510. Documents on his life are rare. He is often compared to the "Herri de Patinir" received at the guild of Saint-Luc in Antwerp in 1535 and could have belonged to Joachim Patinir's entourage. His Flemish nickname evokes a white streak; in Italy, where his paintings circulated very early, he is called "Civetta", the little owl that he is said to have hidden as a sign in his landscapes. Met de Bles develops the world landscape: a high point of view embraces fantastic rocks, rivers, ports, fields, villages and bluish horizons. A biblical scene, often tiny, organizes this vast territory without dominating it. In The Temptation of Saint Anthony, the saint and the fantastic creatures occupy part of the foreground, while mines, fires, architecture and paths multiply the secondary episodes. The color changes from the browns and greens close to the cold blues of the distant ones, creating an atmospheric depth. This combination of meticulousness, geological imagination and diffuse narration makes Met de Bles one of the most prolific and sought-after landscapers of his time.
